On March 11th, Madonna gathered an influential group of friends and supporters at Diane von Furstenberg’s headquarters in New York City for an inspiring evening in support of Raising Malawi, a nonprofit organization she founded dedicated to transforming the lives of children in Malawi, especially through the life-saving healthcare provided at The Mercy James Hospital.
Today, Madonna and Raising Malawi are excited to announce a new way for individuals to get involved: by becoming a Raising Malawi Partner. This opportunity allows supporters to make a meaningful, lasting impact by committing to monthly donations that directly support critical healthcare operations and provide essential resources for Malawi’s most vulnerable children. Every contribution plays a pivotal role in ensuring children receive the urgent care they desperately need.
Madonna shared, "The thing I’m most proud of in my life is the work I’ve done helping vulnerable children in Africa, particularly in Malawi, and of course, my incredible, beautiful children. I’ve always believed that every child deserves a chance to thrive. Your support of Raising Malawi means the world to these children and to all of us who are working tirelessly to make a difference."
Event Highlights and New Partnerships
The evening also marked the announcement of exciting new partnerships. Among them were KidsOR, led by co-founder and chairman Gareth Wood, a forward-thinking organization dedicated to bringing access to safe surgery to every child who needs it, along with ELMA Philanthropies and its president Robyn Calder, a private philanthropy focused on improving the lives of children in Africa.
Hosted by actress and comedian Amy Schumer, the event featured a mesmerizing piano performance by Madonna’s daughter, Mercy James. Other notable attendees, including Chris Rock and Lauren Sanchez were on hand to lend their support.
With a population of 20 million, half of whom are children, Malawi remains one of the world’s poorest nations, making the need for support more critical than ever. The event also marked the official launch of Raising Malawi’s renewed initiatives, which aim to improve the lives of Malawi’s children through healthcare, education, arts, and athletics.
Funds raised during the evening directly supported Raising Malawi’s flagship program, The Mercy James Centre, which provides life-saving surgeries to over 2,000 children annually. This center also plays a critical role in training pediatric surgeons and intensive care health workers in Malawi. In addition, Raising Malawi proudly supports the Jacaranda School for Orphans, the Home of Hope Children’s Homes, and Ascent Soccer—an initiative focused on empowering young athletes in Malawi.
To celebrate the renewed efforts, Madonna spoke with People Magazine’s Jeff Nelson, who accompanied her to the opening of The Mercy James Centre in 2017, to discuss the impact of Raising Malawi and the exciting new direction of the initiative.
