We are pleased to confirm that Madonna has made a gift to Global Fund for Women to support women's rights groups in Nigeria and the surrounding region. Her gift will help these groups combat escalating violence and human rights abuses including violence, trafficking and child marriage.
In Nigeria, Global Fund for Women intend to use these funds to help women's groups to organize and demand the safe return of the kidnapped girls, and assist girls who escaped by providing counseling and other comprehensive services. Global Fund for Women will also strengthen women's organizations to end human rights violations in Nigeria, as well as in countries including Burkina Faso, Democratic Republic of Congo and Central African Republic.
Welcoming Madonna's gift, Jane Sloane, VP of Programs for the Global Fund for Women, said, "Madonna has the ability to influence and reach audiences all over the world. We hope her participation will encourage others to donate, supporting local women's groups who are working for the education, safety and empowerment of women and girls."
Madonna said, "The world is watching Nigeria. It is a crucial time for us to support all efforts for the safe return of the kidnapped girls and to extend our support to women in other countries who are also working for peace and security in their region."
