Recorded for the soundtrack for "The Next Best Thing," the song is a cover of Don McLean's 1972 U.S. No. 1. Madonna took her version to No. 1 in the U.K., Japan, Germany and Australia (among other countries). In the U.S., however, since no commercial single was released, it could only chart due to its airplay and therefore settled for a No. 29 peak in early 2000. The video for the clip was directed by Philipp Stoezl and was nominated for best cinematography in a video at the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards. The clip featured Madonna and co-star Rupert Everett romping around a sparsely decorated set (it's only real prop was a huge American flag hanging in the background). The footage of Madonna was intercut with scenes from across the U.S. of average Americans posing in front of the flag.
