Originally written by Madonna's brother-in-law Joe Henry, the single was released in November 2000 and hit No. 4 in both the U.S. and U.K. After Madonna had heard Henry's original version, she decided to retool it with Mirwais and make it her own. Most of the lyrics remain intact. Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed the "Madonna Goes Cowgirl"  music video, which was nominated for best female video and best choreography at the 2001 MTV Video Music Awards.
